How God Speaks to Me + Beginner-Friendly Tips to Hear God’s Voice
Have you ever asked, "Is that me… or is that God?" Or maybe you’ve wondered why it feels like He’s silent when you’ve been praying for answers?
You’re not alone, friend. Learning to hear God’s voice is one of the most powerful and intimate parts of your faith walk—and yes, you can learn to recognize it clearly.
In this post, I’m sharing how God speaks to me in my everyday life, and how you can begin to tune in to His voice with confidence. Let’s dive in.
5 WAYS GOD SPEAKS TO US
1. Through His Word (The Bible)
The Bible is the primary and most reliable way God speaks. His Word is more than historical text—it’s His voice in written form. Scripture is described as alive and active (Hebrews 4:12), and that’s exactly how it feels when you begin to engage with it regularly.
There have been countless times when I was facing a tough decision or feeling overwhelmed, and then I opened my Bible to a random chapter—only to find exactly the wisdom, peace, or answer I needed. That is no coincidence. That is God speaking.
The more time you spend in Scripture, the more familiar you become with how God speaks, what He sounds like, and how He leads.
2. Through Peace and Promptings
God often speaks through the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit. It’s that quiet internal voice that doesn’t shout, but instead offers a sense of calm clarity. When I’m trying to discern God’s direction, I pay attention to what brings peace versus what stirs anxiety or confusion.
Peace can be a powerful confirmation. It doesn’t always mean the decision is easy or risk-free, but there’s an inner knowing that it’s right. On the other hand, if something is off, the Holy Spirit might stir unrest as a warning. As believers, we are called to let peace "rule" in our hearts (Colossians 3:15), and that peace is often how God leads us.
Promptings are also important. Sometimes I feel a strong impression to text a friend, say a prayer, or pause and be still. Following those promptings has led to beautiful God-moments.
3. Through Dreams or Visions
God is a creative communicator, and He often uses dreams or visions to speak. In the Bible, God spoke through dreams to Joseph, Daniel, and even Pilate’s wife. He still does that today.
While not every dream is from God (sometimes it's just your brain processing), some dreams stand out. They’re vivid, memorable, and stir your spirit. When I’ve had dreams that felt spiritually significant, I wrote them down and asked God for clarity. I also check them against Scripture to make sure they align with His truth.
If a dream gives direction, convicts your heart, or provides peace and insight, it could be God speaking. Just always use wisdom and discernment when interpreting dreams.
4. Through Other People
God often uses people as His messengers. Whether it’s a sermon, a conversation with a friend, or even a social media post that hits you right in the heart—He knows how to get your attention through others.
There have been moments where someone randomly shared a verse or encouragement with me, and it was exactly what I had been praying about. That’s the beauty of God’s timing and orchestration. He uses community to speak, confirm, and guide.
God may also use correction through trusted spiritual mentors, helping you course-correct in love. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that there is safety in godly counsel, and often His voice will be echoed through people who are submitted to Him.
5. Through Circumstances
God will sometimes speak through open doors, closed doors, delays, and divine redirections. While it may feel like life is just "happening," there are often spiritual signals embedded in our circumstances.
Maybe you didn’t get the job you prayed for, but months later something better came along. Or a relationship ended, and it broke your heart—but it positioned you for greater peace and purpose. These are the ways God moves behind the scenes, orchestrating our steps.
I’ve learned to pause and ask, "God, what are You saying in this? What are You showing me through this situation?" When we look at our lives with spiritual eyes, we realize that God is always speaking—even through what doesn’t make sense.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY TIPS TO HEAR GOD’S VOICE
1. Start with the Word
If you want to hear God, go to the source. Begin reading your Bible regularly, even just a few verses a day. Choose an easy-to-understand translation like the NLT or NIV if you're new. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate what you're reading.
Use tools like a study Bible or devotionals if needed, but don’t overcomplicate it. Just start. Over time, you’ll begin to recognize patterns, promises, and principles that shape your ability to discern God’s voice.
2. Make Room for Quiet
God often speaks in stillness. Turn down the noise—the constant scrolling, multitasking, and rushing. Set aside time each day, even 5-10 minutes, to simply be quiet before Him.
Listen. Don’t fill every prayer time with words. Sometimes His response comes in the silence, the impressions, or a fresh thought you didn’t expect.
3. Write It Down
Start a journal. Record what you sense God is saying, what Scriptures stood out, what dreams you had, or what prayers were answered. Over time, this journal becomes a testimony and a roadmap.
When you start seeing patterns, confirmations, or repeated themes, you’ll realize that yes—God is speaking to you.
4. Act on What You Know
Sometimes we’re waiting for a fresh word when we haven’t acted on the last one. God responds to obedience. If He’s already told you to do something, and you haven’t, He may not repeat Himself.
Take the step. Obey even when it’s uncomfortable. God often reveals the next step after you move in faith.
5. Test Every Voice
Not every voice you hear is God’s. That’s why Scripture must always be your anchor. If what you hear contradicts the Bible, it’s not from Him. Period. God’s voice brings peace, clarity, wisdom, and aligns with His Word. Use wise counsel and prayer to confirm what you hear, especially if it's a big decision.
God wants to speak to you. He’s not hiding or playing games. You are His child, and He delights in guiding, comforting, and leading you. You don’t have to be a spiritual giant to hear Him. You just need an open heart, a willingness to listen, and a desire to draw closer.
Start today. Open your Bible. Make space to listen. Write what you sense. Trust the process. God is already speaking—and now, you’re learning to hear Him.
