God can’t bless what you’re too distracted to notice.

We’re moving from awareness → action.

If you’ve been feeling scattered, unfocused, or spiritually dull, then keep reading because on this article, I’ll share some practical ways to silence distractions and strengthen your focus on God and your assignment.

On last week’s article, I shared how to identify the 5 major distractions that may be pulling you away from your purpose. And now, the focus is on how to overcome those distractions and stay focused on what really matters.

Anchor scripture:

Luke 10:42 NIV: “but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

AMP: “but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her.”

This scripture shows us that we can get carried away doing a lot of things that keep us busy but get us nowhere. We get distracted with constantly “DOing,” but neglecting to “BEing.” DOing is the constant hustle and busyness that gets us nowhere; and BEing, which is what God has called us, is resting in His faithfulness and the finished work of Christ.

Our minds constantly race with all we have to do, and sometimes it’s truly because we lack the vision and the bigger perspective of what truly matters.

But this scripture clearly tells us that we are to focus only on the necessary things – things that bring us closer to fulfilling purpose – to fulfilling our destiny.

When we choose that good part as Mary did in the scripture, the part that leads us to our destiny, it cannot and will not be taken away from us and it will be as to us, an advantage we have in fulfilling our dreams, vision, and assignments.

Now, let’s jump into these practical strategies to overcome those distractions that are setting us back from our purpose.

Strategy #1

Pray First

We must invite God into our priorities daily.

Before you get into your tasks for the day, ask: “Lord, what matters most today? What should I focus on today? What’s on Your priority list today, Lord?” Then ask Him to give you the grace and insight to do all that is required of you in that day. Ask Him for the wisdom to face any challenges that may arise.

Then commit the day to Him – In Proverbs 16:3 it says that we should commit whatever we do to the Lord and He will establish our plans.

So, we must first pray – This is a non-negotiable.

Strategy #2

Have a PLAN!

Plan with purpose and intention.

1.    Plan your day and daily routines

  • Use a notebook, journal, or an actual planner intentionally to map out your day.

  • Prioritize 3 key tasks daily that align with your God-given goals.

  •  And remember to schedule rest — it’s not laziness, it’s stewardship.

2.    Map out your Goals for each day

What would you like to achieve today? This week? This month? This will help you remain accountable to yourself

I am an avid planner. I use my planner plan out my daily tasks, map out my monthly and yearly goals, and also my reflections for each month and quarter.

Even in a season of my life when I was a stay-at-home mom, before I started my stationery brand, I would use my planner to plan out my house chores, errands, and our family activities.

Even God was and is a Planner, so who are we not to plan? Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God has a plan for us.

When you have a clear list of what you want to accomplish each day, it becomes easier to see what isn't aligned with your goals and vision, and what is.

The late Dr. Myles Munroe said: “the principal key to management of time and change is planning. Successful people are people who effectively plan how to use their time.”

Proverbs 21:5 NLT says that “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”

So, we must set a plan in motion and take action steps that lead us closer to its fulfillment.

Strategy #3

Train/Renew your mind

1.    Just like the scripture says, train up a child in the way he should go and when he’s old he will not depart from it, we must also train up our mind in the direction we want it to go.

2.    Read the bible, meditate on it, let it renew your mind (this is a non-negotiable)

Joshua 1:8 NIV - Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

My goodness, there is power in the Word of God to transform your mindset.

Personally, it has completely changed the way I think and my perspective on things. I love what Romans 12:2 NLT puts it: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

3.    Read other books that will positively feed your mind.

Strategy #4

Seek God’s Guidance in the Secret Place.

This is also a non-negotiable just like meditating on the Word of God. Psalm 91:1 says “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

The gospels often pointed out that Jesus often went off to the mountains to pray and when He returns, He returns in power, doing mighty miracles, signs and wonders.

If you recall the anchor scripture at the beginning of this article about Mary and Martha. Mary stayed at Jesus’ feet to learn but Martha was distracted with “good things” but wrong timing.

To overcome the distractions that plague you, you must spend some alone time with the God who called us and assigned you to that task. It is very crucial to our success in life and in destiny.

Strategy #5

Put systems and structures in place

Have standardized processes, automate tasks, create clear guidelines.

How do you want your life, workday, or business to function or run on a daily basis, monthly, yearly etc.?

Would people looking in from the outside be able to tell that you have systems and values in place?

Have set times for checking and responding to emails, phone calls, even for browsing social media.

Stop answering phone calls at all times of the day when it is not an emergency.

Turn off unnecessary alerts and notifications.

The benefits of having structures and systems in place is improved efficiency, reduced costs, enhanced quality, better decision-making, and consistency.

Strategy #6

Seek mentorship

My mentor has been incredibly instrumental, by the grace of God, in my growth both personally and professionally. She challenges me to take bold steps of faith quickly and promptly.

A mentor will guide you and show you the way. They will let you know “yes do this” or “no don’t do that” or “try doing it this way” because they have been there.

Make sure your mentor is committed to your success. My mentor would refuse for me to “shy-away” in the background in our group meetings or sessions. She would often call me out to speak, ask me questions, ask me to share my thoughts and insights. This helped build my confidence and courage in speaking up in places where it matters the most. So, if you don’t already have one, please find a mentor that can guide you, hold your hands, and lead you in the right direction. Someone who is truly committed to your growth and success. Someone who you can be accountable to. Proverbs 20:18 tells us that plans succeed through good counsels.

Here are some tangible tools you can start implementing today:

  • Journaling prompts to re-center your mind.

    • Also to identify your distractions and map out a plan to rise above it

  • Daily “Alignment Check” — review if your plans match your priorities.

  • Habit tracker for consistency.

    • Forming a new habit? Use a tracker to help you stay consistent and monitor your progress.

    • It helps you stay accountable to yourself.

    • Plus, it’s rewarding seeing your progress on paper.

  • Scripture cards or affirmations for focus (faith-based).

    • To help me with this, I have dedicated spaces on my planner where I write down my weekly as well as monthly affirmations.

My planner is also my prayer partner and yours can be too — it’s where I align my intentions with God’s instructions. I intentionally designed my planner with all these components to help me stay centered and grounded in my faith as I pursue my dreams. If you need a faith-centered 2026 planner like mine, then check out the one I created.

Lastly, start creating boundaries.

You should be able to:

  • Say no without guilt.

  • Delegate or delay what’s not for this season.

  • Identify people who distract us vs. people who disciple us.

These are vital for your success in life.

Here’s a quick takeaway from this: “Invest your time wisely, because it’s the only resource you can’t replenish, and when you respect your time, other people will respect it as well.”

You are more than capable of overcoming these destiny derailing distractions. God has given you the capacity to overcome, to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Don’t let distractions such as fear and timidity stop you. Don’t let well-meaning friends and loved ones who don’t understand the call of God upon your life stop you. Don’t let unforgiveness and bitterness, anger and anxiety stop you. Don’t let hustle and grind and striving, turned false idols, stop you. You have a glorious future and destiny, and the enemy knows that very well, that is why he is trying to stop you. You are not ordinary; you were created for such a time as this to carry out that assignment that God has called you to. You are a man or woman without limits; you are a man or woman of destiny!

So, at the end like Apostle Paul, you can say, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful, and you will hear the Lord say to you, well done, my good and faithful servant. (2 Timothy 4:7 NLT).
